In March of 1943, following a complimentary article about Tabuteau in Time Magazine: King of the Reeds, he received a number of ‘fan’ letters including some from young high school students. On page 239 of her Tabuteau biography, Laila Storch summarizes a student’s letter to which he personally replied. It is a ‘classic.’

With the passing of Wilbur Isaac Hilles in August 2023 and now Martha Scherer-Alfee in February 2024, no oboe students of Marcel Tabuteau at the Curtis Institute are still living.
