Abe Torchinsky (1920-2009) studied tuba at the Curtis Institute graduating in 1941. While at Curtis, Torchinsky attended Tabuteau’s wind classes that he credited for his understanding of ensemble playing. He later joined the Philadelphia Orchestra (1949) performing with Marcel Tabuteau until Tabuteau retired in 1954. Torchinsky left the Orchestra in 1972 to teach Tuba at the University of Michigan, retiring in 1989.
