Philadelphia Orchestra’s
First Transcontinental Tour
archived by Daniel Bonade
The Philadelphia Orchestra’s first transcontinental tour across America took place from April 13th to May 18th in 1936. It was a highly publicized event sponsored by RCA Victor Company. The informative 28-page booklet shown below announces the 8000 mile tour of ‘Stokowski and the Philadelphia Orchestra.’ Tabuteau is pictured on page 13 with the caption: ‘The woodwind section is especially proud of MARCEL TABUTEAU, one of the world’s best oboe players, and the Orchestra’s finest cook.’ Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 2 was performed at certain concerts with Tabuteau featured as one of the four soloists.
