Louis Rosenblatt (1928–2009) studied with Marcel Tabuteau from 1948 to 1951 at the Curtis Institute of Music receiving his artist’s diploma. Following his graduation, he served as first oboe in the U.S. Army Field Band and in 1954 became English horn of the Houston Symphony. The following season he joined the New Orleans Philharmonic, remaining there until his move to Philadelphia in 1959 where he joined the Philadelphia Orchestra as assistant principal oboe. When English horn player John Minsker retired, Mr. Rosenblatt moved to that position to fill the vacancy. He retired from the Philadelphia Orchestra in 1995 after 36 years of distinguished service. Melissa Stevens interviewed him in 1997.
The following is an extract from Melissa A. Stevens’ 1999 dissertation, Marcel Tabuteau: Pedagogical Concepts and Practices for Teaching Musical Expressiveness: An Oral History.
